History

Our Affiliate began as a Race Committee planning the Triad's first Komen Race for the Cure® held on April 15, 2000, in downtown Winston-Salem.  In June, 2000, the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was officially formed with a 15-member governing Board of Directors.  In November, 2000, the Komen NC Triad Affiliate awarded its first grants -- a total of $190,000.00.

In addition to the Race, now held annually on the first Saturday in May at Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, our Affiliate oversees a variety of educational, outreach, and fundraising activities throughout the year.  Our Affiliate was able to add its first staff in 2005; and today we are staffed with 4 full-time employees and a host of dedicated and committed Volunteers serving as members of our Board of Directors and Committee Chairs.  Our signature Affiliate event, the Komen NC Triad Race for the Cure®, would not be possible without the hundreds of community volunteers that have dedicated their time, energy, and passion to the Race and its mission.

Today, our Affiliate, known as the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, proudly serves 11 local counties:  Alamance, Davie, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Surry, Stokes, Wilkes, and Yadkin.

The North Carolina Triad Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® -- along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources -- is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in our community.  Through events like the Komen NC Triad Race for the Cure®, we have invested more than $3.5 million in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in the 10-county triad region that we originally serviced.  We now serve 11 counties with the addition of Rockingham County into our service area in April, 2010.  Of the funds generated by the Komen North Carolina Triad Affiliate, 75% of net proceeds stay in our service area.  The remaining income goes to the National Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures.

Our vision:  A world without breast cancer.
